Sex Quenches Thirst of Female Beetles

In some insect species, including certain beetles, moths and crickets, the males produce exceptionally large ejaculates that can account for up to 10 percent of their body weight.

They found that thirsty females mated 40 percent more frequently than those with free access to water.

Like sponges, females can absorb the water from seminal fluid through their reproductive tracts. The more water they take in, the less frequently they need to mate, an activity that's physically damaging to the females. (The males have spines on their genitalia that puncture females' reproductive tract during mating.)

By delivering a deluge of water with the sperm that thereby also slakes a female's thirst, a male can help ensure his sperm has more time to fertilize the eggs without competing sperm from future mates.

Female beetles mate to quench their thirst, literally.

Counterfeiting of Viagra etc. is one thing, but this could cause devastation!

Jill McGivering investigates drug piracy and the counterfeit drugs which threaten to jeopardise the fight against malaria.
Mosquito biting
Could drug pirates wreck the world's best hope of combating malaria? A new drug, Artesunate, developed from traditional Chinese medicine is being hailed as the best chance of tackling malaria - which kills millions of people every year in Africa and South East Asia.
But it's being undermined by widespread counterfeiting, particularly by counterfeit drugs containing a small amount of Artesunate which then allow the disease to develop a resistance to the drug. And ironically it's Chinese drug pirates who are believed to be largely responsible.
A WHO health official says there'll be a public Health catastrophe if resistance to Artesunate is allowed to develop. Interpol tell us ethnic Chinese criminal gangs, operating across borders, are largely to blame for the counterfeits.

Vista

Don't have Vista myself, but don't think I want it with what I have read about it!
Dear Microsoft Corporation,

I’ve read through hundreds of online reviews and comments about Vista. I’ve asked IT guys and Microsoft Certified Professionals. I’ve read the PC magazine reviews. I’ve given it a spin on my friends’ laptops.

You’d think at least someone (other than your PR people) would find something to like about a piece of software that took an industry leader five years and a gazillion dollars to develop. But I’ve yet to hear anyone say “Wow!” about it.

A Windows worshipping gamer acquaintance told me it took literally seven or eight hours of churning to install his Vista Home Premium (sic) upgrade. After staying up all night, he found none of his device drivers worked.

With the tales of the new DRM lockdown, the User Account Control nagging, the virtualization restrictions, and the priced-to-upsell $400 product – your credibility is about as good as OJ Simpson’s.

I just don’t trust what you say anymore.

BBC Boobs

Oh dear, this is worrying--the BBC is NOTHING if it is not honest!
clipped from digg.com

Grylls was filmed building a raft by himself, whereas the crew had actually put it together and dismantled it beforehand, to ensure that it worked. And in a further episode, supposedly "wild" horses rounded up by Grylls had come from a local trekking facility. So why eat the bugs??

Padraig Harrington

Padraig Harrington pipped Sergio Garcia in a four-hole play-off to clinch the 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie after one of the most dramatic finishes in recent years.

The Irishman won his maiden major title despite blowing a one-shot lead in the Barry Burn in regulation play in scenes reminiscent of Jean van de Velde's infamous collapse in 1999.

Ice melt

Remarkable evidence of the vanishing glaciers!

Introduction
While the effect of human activity on the global climate is hotly debated, physical signs of environmental change are all around us.

Some scientists say an increase in the rate of melting of the world's glaciers is evidence of global warming.

Argentina's Upsala Glacier was once the biggest in South America, but it is now disappearing at a rate of 200 metres per year.

Other scientists say its reduction is due to complicated shifts in glacial dynamics and local geology.

"A lot of breeze, a fresh breeze. I don't know what you'd call it. A minor breeze, a little zephyr."
Ernie 'Met Office' Els runs through the Beaufort Scale in his attempts to explain exactly what the wind was doing at Carnoustie on Thursday morning.

"The weather is going to come in sideways."
Miguel Angel Jimenez tries to out-forecast Els with his prediction of how the weekend's weather will arrive in Carnoustie. And I think for 'weather' we should read 'rain'.
