This HAS to be good news for LEEDS!
clipped from news.bbc.co.uk
Leeds Rhinos have moved to ease their injury crisis by re-signing England international Lee Smith, who was released by London Wasps on Tuesday.
Lee Smith

The 22-year-old returns to Headingley on a four-year deal after his cross-code move at the end of last season.

Smith scored the winning try for Leeds in last year's Grand Final

Smith had asked to leave Wasps for personal reasons.

"It's a dream come true to get another opportunity to play for the Rhinos and pull on a blue and amber shirt again," said Smith.

BBC News - Freeview to launch new HD service

Natural World
Programmes like the BBC's Natural World will be broadcast in HD

Freeview is to launch a new free high definition (HD) TV service later.

BBC, ITV and Channel 4 HD channels will be offered on Freeview HD, as well as up to 50 standard definition channels.

Viewers will need a new set top box connected to an HD Ready TV, or a TV with built-in Freeview HD to receive the service.

The launch comes just before the football World Cup this summer, when both the BBC and ITV will be showing matches in HD on Freeview.

Freeview HD boxes are already available to buy from around £140, while TVs with built in Freeview HD have just been introduced this month. Freeview HD recorders will also be available later this Spring.

Viewers will only need to update their equipment if they want to watch the new HD channels on Freeview, otherwise their existing set top boxes will continue to receive all of the current standard definition channels.

Those who currently own an HD Ready TV, or one with built-in Freeview, will not be able to receive the service without a Freeview HD set top box. HD Ready TVs bearing the Freeview HD logo will also have the capability.

Leeds v Wigan

Still not injury free, the Rhinos should put up a good show in an hour.I think they will win!
clipped from news.bbc.co.uk
Kevin Sinfield
Leaders Wigan face their biggest test of the season so far against faltering Super League champions Leeds Rhinos.

Michael McIlorum returns after injury and Cameron Phelps should be fit after picking up a knock at Castleford.

Injury-hit Leeds are reinforced by the likely return of skipper Kevin Sinfield (thigh) after three games out.

Ryan Hall, Danny Buderus and Tom Bush are set to return after knocks, Ryan Bailey has recovered from illness and young Luke Ambler gets a first call.

Leeds are still missing four key players for their return to the ground where they lost 28-10 on their last visit last July.

BBC News - Yorkshire space enthusiast records Earth using balloon

Image from Robert Harrison's balloon
Mr Harrison says the balloon can travel 22 miles above the Earth's surface

Images of the Earth from the edge of space have been captured by a helium balloon which can travel more than 20 miles above sea level.

Robert Harrison, of Highburton, West Yorkshire, developed the device after trying to find a way of taking aerial pictures of his home.

The images are taken by a camera in a box. It is attached to the balloon, with a parachute and tracking device.

The balloon eventually bursts, returns to ground and is traced by Mr Harrison.

Mr Harrison, 38, said the balloon-mounted camera project had cost about £500.

"It is basically an insulated box that contains a camera and a tracking device," he said.

"The box is launched with a parachute and a balloon, and off it goes into the atmosphere.

"The camera records pictures of the earth from about 35km."

Mr Harrison has so far launched about 12 balloons

Mr Harrison said the results had been "phenomenal".

"I could never have expected to get the results I have - you can see the curvature of the Earth, the blackness of space and the thin blue line that makes up the atmosphere," he added.

Mr Harrison, who has launched about 12 balloons, said he developed the balloon project after trying to find a way of getting aerial shots of his home.

"For a hobby I had this remote control helicopter and I wanted to take some pictures of my house using it," he said.

"It very quickly became apparent I could not do it with a helicopter, so I decided on a balloon."

Rooney's 13th-minute header set United on their way to a comfortable victory
Wayne Rooney scored twice in another irresistible display as Manchester United eased into the Champions League quarter-finals at AC Milan's expense.

Leading 3-2 from the first leg, Rooney eased United in front, heading in Gary Neville's cross, and then clipped his 30th goal this season from Nani's pass.

Ji-Sung Park and Darren Fletcher dinked in two more as United romped through.

Ronaldinho and Klass Jan Huntelaar went close with headers but even substitute David Beckham could not inspire Milan.

BBC News - Oscar bosses defend Farrah Fawcett snub

Farrah Fawcett
The star is best remembered for her role in Charlie's Angels

Actress Farrah Fawcett was not included in the Oscars In Memoriam segment because she was better known as a TV star, the Academy has said.

Fawcett's family said on Tuesday they were "deeply saddened" and "bereft" over her omission from the ceremony.

But the academy said as the star was known for her "remarkable television work", it would be more appropriate to honour her at the Emmy Awards.

Charlie's Angels star Fawcett died of cancer in June last year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences executive director Bruce Davis said he was not surprised some fans and family members were upset at the exclusion.

'We're sorry'

He said the committee debated including Fawcett in the memorial segment, but "an unusual number of extremely distinguished screenwriters" died this year, and the academy tried to honour many of them in the short time allowed.

"In every category, you're going to miss some wonderful people," said Davis, who has helped assemble Oscar's In Memoriam montage since it began in 1993.

When asked why Michael Jackson was included when other actors were left out, Davis said the singer had appeared in a popular theatrical film recently.

But he appreciated that the actress's omission would upset some people.

"There's nothing you can say to people, particularly to family members, within a day or two of the show that helps at all," Davis said.

"They tend to be surprised and hurt, and we understand that and we're sorry for it."

EU protection for Yorkshire Pudding!

Think this must be a joke!
clipped from news.bbc.co.uk
Yorkshire pudding makers are planning a bid for the Sunday roast favourite to be given the same protected food status held by Parma ham and champagne.
Yorkshire puddings

The batter puddings could win European rights, meaning they must be made within Yorkshire if they are to be labelled as such.

Yorkshire firms Roberts, Aunt Bessie's and the Real Yorkshire Pudding Company are in talks about submitting a bid.

They are being backed by the Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber.

An award of European protected name status would stop rivals from outside the region cashing in on the famous name.

Cornish clotted cream, Whitstable oysters and Stilton cheese are among British foods with protected status.

Obviously Yorkshire pudding tastes better when it's made by a Yorkshireman. It's all in the wrists I think

BBC News - James Bulger murderer Jon Venables returned to prison

James Bulger
James Bulger was murdered in Liverpool in 1993

One of James Bulger's killers has been returned to prison after he breached the terms of his release.

Jon Venables, 27, is back in jail after being released on life licence in 2001.

He was detained with his friend Robert Thompson for the horrific murder of the three-year-old toddler in Bootle, Liverpool, in 1993.

The Ministry of Justice said: "We can confirm that Jon Venables has been recalled to custody following a breach of licence conditions."

Railway line

Details of the nature of the breach were not released.

Both Thompson and Venables were given new identities when they were released after serving eight years for the little boy's murder.

On February 13, 1993, they abducted James from a shopping centre in Bootle and killed him on a railway line.

The toddler's battered body was found by children playing on a freight railway line near Walton Lane police station, Liverpool.

The two 10-year-old killers were arrested days later and became the youngest to be charged with murder in the 20th Century.
