British Airways cabin crew strike illegal, court rules

A strike by British Airways cabin crew planned for Christmas has been declared illegal in a High Court ruling.

The court agreed with BA that the cabin crew's union, Unite, had not correctly balloted its members on the strike action.

The injunction means that the 12-day strike cannot now go ahead.

Unite called it "a disgraceful day for democracy" and vowed to hold a fresh ballot of cabin crew if the dispute with BA was not resolved.

British Airways said the decision would be welcomed by "hundreds of thousands of families in the UK and around the world".

Tesco withdraws ho-ho-horrible ginger Xmas card

Photo

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's biggest retailer Tesco apologised on Tuesday after complaints that a Christmas card it sold was offensive to people with ginger hair.

The card in question shows a child with red hair sitting on the lap of Santa Claus under the banner: "Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones."

Davinia Phillips, whose three children all have red hair, was enraged when she saw the card at one of Tesco's stores in northern England.

Ban and fine should not suspended in my opinion!

Serena Williams fined and given suspended ban

Serena Williams has been fined and given a suspended three-year ban from the US Open for her tirade at a line judge at Flushing Meadows.

The American, 28, verbally abused an official after a foot-fault call which gave Kim Clijsters a match point in their semi-final this year.

The world number one will incur the ban if she commits any further "major offence" before the end of 2011.

Nikolay Davydenko takes ATP World Tour title in London

Nikolay Davydenko
Nikolay Davydenko became the first Russian to win the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals with a brilliant display against Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro.

The 28-year-old claimed the biggest title of his career, and a cheque for just over £900,000, with a 6-3 6-4 defeat of the US Open champion.

Davydenko, who beat Rafael Nadal, Robin Soderling and Roger Federer on his way to the final, was sharper throughout as Del Potro appeared to be feeling the after-effects of his semi-final win over Soderling the previous evening.

Australian aims to breed 'green' sheep that burp less

Australian scientists have said they are hoping to breed sheep that burp less as part of efforts to tackle climate change.

The scientists have been trying to identify a genetic link that causes some sheep to belch less than others.

Burping is a far greater cause of emissions in sheep than flatulence, they say.

About 16% of Australia's greenhouse emissions come from agriculture, says the department of climate change.

Andy Murray win keeps alive World Tour Finals hopes

Andy Murray

Andy Murray must wait to find out if he has reached the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals in London after a three-set win over Fernando Verdasco.

The Briton came through 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) but now faces a nervous wait until Thursday's evening match between Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro to see if he has qualified from the four-man group.

Any win for Federer will take Murray through but a straight-sets win for Del Potro would put the Scot out, while a three-set win for Del Potro would see it come down to the percentage of games won by Murray, Federer and Del Potro.

Scotland's brilliant defence left the normally lethal Australians impotent

Australia dominated territory and possession but it was 3-3 at the break as Scotland fly-half Phil Godman cancelled out a Matt Giteau penalty.

A Godman penalty and Chris Paterson drop-goal saw Scotland edge ahead.

And although Ryan Cross went over for an injury-time try, Giteau's missed conversion handed the Scots victory.

Henry admits replay would be fair

Thierry Henry handled the ball in the build up to France's goal
Under-fire France striker Thierry Henry believes a replay of the World Cup play-off with the Republic of Ireland would "be the fairest solution".

The Republic appealed to have the match replayed after an Henry handball helped France to a 2-1 aggregate victory.

But their plea was rejected by Fifa, while the French Football Federation will not advocate a rematch either.

Henry said: "Of course the fairest solution would be to replay the game but it is not in my control."
